We are on the west side of the Hida Mountains (Hida sanmyaku), often referred to as the Northern Alps, that stretch through the prefectures of Nagano, Toyama and Gifu. It was the archaeologist William Gowland (1842-1922) who first coined the phrase ‘Japanese Alps’ in reference to the range at Hida. Here, the gentle glow of domestic interiors offset the severity of the winter cold. The mountains themselves are rendered without contour lines, their surface suggested in graduated tones of grey and black.
