A pair of cloisonné enamel vases

Signed Ki (Hayahi Kihyoe, 1848-1931) within a heart-shaped reserve

Meiji period, late 19th century

 

each oviform with short everted neck and foot, copper-gilt mounts, decorated in coloured cloisonné enamels and musen [wireless] on pale blue ground, depicting a pine tree beside Mount Fuji, marked to base, wood stands

 

each 19 cm., 7½ in. high 

Hayashi Kihyoe was one of the foremost makers employed by the Ando Company of cloisonné enamels. Although the Hayashi family name is rarely signed on these wares, works by Kihyoe were exhibited at the Chicago Expiation of 1893, the fourth Domestic Exposition of 1895, the Aichi Prefecture Exposition of 1899, the 1900 Paris Exposition, the fifth Domestic Industrial Exposition of 1903, the St Louis Exposition of 1904 and the Anglo-Japan Exposition in 1910.
