William Plomer was a writer, editor and poet, and a trusted companion of Ian Fleming since 1929, when they met at a literary party at Cheyne Walk. A wartime colleague in NI, Plomer was later a publisher's reader at Jonathan Cape. He was instrumental in getting Casino Royale published and took an active part reading and commenting on each successive Bond typescript. Plomer was, unofficially, Fleming's editor-in-chief. The novel Goldfinger is dedicated 'To my gentle reader William Plomer'. Ann Fleming noted that Plomer was one of the few people around whom Ian could relax.
