Belonging to what’s considered the most prestigious lineage of chronographs in Patek Philippe’s repertoire, the present lot stands as a development of the manufacturer’s third iteration of perpetual calendar chronographs.
Reference 3971 was first introduced in 1986 alongside reference 3970, as successors to the iconic and celebrated reference 2499. Patek reduced the case diameter of the 3970 and 3971, making it 1.5 mm smaller than the 2499. Reference 3970 was discontinued in 2004 and could be found in different case metals. Already a coveted reference, reference 3971 exceeds its sister reference in rarity.
However, what really sets this example apart is that it belongs to the first series characterized by its snap-on back. It is considered that only the first 100 pieces, for each the 3970 and 3971, were made with such a case.
The movement of this lot confirms it as the first 3970/71 movement was 875’000 and this example bears the movement number 875’077.
This watch further has its original dial with baton indexes, the date indication with a dot between 31 and 1 as well as the feuille hands, as opposed to the baton hands found on later production.
These dials are typically found across some of the first series cases and the first part of the second second series.
The dial of this piece has developed a most attractive ivory colour as opposed to the standard silvered appearance. It creates a highly attractive effect, giving this important piece an even greater appeal.
This watch is presented on behalf of a private collector who has been carefully looking after it for over 30 years.
