It is observable in some early Lange 1, as is the case with the present lot reference 101.002, that they are fitted with a solid case back. A departure from the far more usual sapphire crystal display, it was ultimately decided by the company that to hide the movement denied the user the pleasure of viewing what is undeniably a beautiful piece of engineering. Thus solid case backs were removed from the Lange 1 repertoire.
Though one can not argue with the reason behind Lange & Söhne's decision it does mean that examples with such a case back are a rarity. The present lot is therefore such a rarity and one increasingly prized by collectors. This watch also demonstrate other attributes of early production such as the early MIG font and L901.0 calibre.
