The Gondolo collection, which originally comprised of pocket watches before the introduction of wristwatches in the 1920s, was named after the well-known Rio de Janeiro retailer, Gondolo & Labouriau. Patek Philippe had a strong and prosperous business partnership with this Brazilian retailer between 1872 and 1927, during which time they designed timepieces exclusively for them called the "Chronometro Gondolo". Despite the challenges faced by Europe during this period, including lean years and World War, Gondolo & Labouriau remained the sole retailer of nearly one-third of Patek Philippe's entire production of watches.
Chronometro Gondolo wristwatches were more exuberant than the pocket watches. These new designs were the first collection to show such eccentricity and novelty. With this collection, Patek Philippe once again took up the challenge of being constantly at the forefront of the avant-garde.
Today this model is still considered to be one of the most iconic and makes it a highly coveted piece for great collectors.
