In Panerai's extensive centennial history, the 1930-50s stand out as the golden era. It was during this time that the brand became the official supplier of the Royal Italian Navy, giving birth to its most iconic designs, the Radiomir and Luminor models. The PAM00021, introduced in 1997 as the first special edition wristwatch following the acquisition, represented a significant milestone under the new ownership of Vendôme, now known as Richemont, guided by the capable hands of Angelo Bonati.

Legend has it that Angelo Bonati stumbled upon a stash of just over 60 pieces of NOS (New Old Stock) Rolex 618 movements while sifting through the inventory inherited from the original Panerai company. Thereafter, he promptly set out to create a watch inspired by the legendary Rolex 3646, famously worn by the Italian Arditi Incursori (daring assault swimmers) during WW2. Although the origin of the movements as 618s remains speculative, this did not hinder the watch's success—it sold out within two weeks of its release, swiftly recouping the entire investment made by Vendôme in Panerai, and securing its place as one of Panerai's iconic modern timepieces.

Made in a limited edition of 60 pieces, the cushion-shaped 47 mm Radiomir case is dressed in platinum, bearing the hallmark robust style characteristic of Panerai's historic watches. Its elegant, symmetrical construction is divided into three parts, enhanced by wire loop lugs and a sapphire display back engraved 'Officine Panerai Brevettato'.

We are delighted to present this lot from Hammer, numbered 58/60 and in overall excellent condition, complete with its full suite of accessories, including an additional solid case back and case back opening tool both also numbered 58/60. The lot is further accompanied by an original Panerai first aid kit, a 2012 Betarini diver dagger numbered 12/15, and a second PAM00021 strap.
