The Heuer Monaco is truly an icon, and has remained in near-constant production since its introduction in 1969. Named after the iconic racetrack in the glamorous principality on the riviera, it is a racing watch through and through. Its history as such was cemented in the 1971 movie ‘LeMans’ where Steve McQueen famously donned the piece on the big screen.
The present lot is something entirely different though. Known to collectors as the ‘Dark Lord’, Heuer chose to render the watch in an all-black matte PVD case. The blackout treatment doesn’t stop there, it moves onto the dial which takes on a starkly monochromatic black and white effect – with tremendous pops of orange being used for the chronograph hands and sub-registers. These watches are increasingly hard to find, and even rarer to find with the PVD coating in such excellent condition.
