Vianney Halter, a French independent watchmaker, started developing his own collection of wristwatches in 1998. Renowned for his steampunk-inspired and uniquely eccentric designs, Halter made waves in the horological world. In 2000, he introduced what would become his simplest model yet, appropriately named the 'Classic'. This timepiece retained the futuristic porthole aesthetic, a signature established by the Antiqua, but presented it in a more understated, time-only format. Nonetheless, within the Classic line, Halter has exhibited a penchant for experimental creations, likely stemming from its inherently versatile design. The present lot, unveiled in 2022, is a limited edition 'Classic', made for the US market and sold exclusively with Rostovsky Watches. It stands as an expression of gratitude to Halter's cherished US collectors, who have supported his craft over the years.
Named the 'Liberty', this timepiece draws inspiration from the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to America in 1886 commemorating the centennial of American independence. It pays homage to the twin ideals of freedom and independence embodied by this iconic statue. The 38 mm titanium case encases a captivating green dial, meticulously chosen to echo the hue of the American currency bill, that features an outline of the 11-pointed star fortification on Liberty Island, where the Statue of Liberty resides. Gracing the periphery of the star is a motif resembling Lady Liberty’s crown, while the numerals borrow their style from 18th-century US dollar notes. For the first time, Halter employs sapphire crystal to create the dial, and minute and hour hands. Furthermore, the second hand is crafted to mimic Lady Liberty’s torch, with the flame burning brightly at its tip. Turning to the caseback, the automatic winding movement proudly bears the original name of the sculpture, 'La Liberté Éclairant le Monde'. We are pleased to offer this unique timepiece, numbered 0 out of 12 in this exclusive series.
