Employing algorithmic mapping and bespoke craftsmanship, Joris Laarman’s Leaf Table signifies an ideal interplay of technology and metalworking. Through its mechanized composition, the resin, steel and aluminum piece resembles the sturdiness of a tree trunk in its base and the intricate veins of a delicate leaf on its surface. As evidenced in the present work, Laarman’s exploration of digital manufacturing is equally matched with his interest in contemporary design and architecture.
Made of a single mold, The Leaf Table is one of several tables - the Forest Tables series - produced employing Laarman’s method of algorithmic modeling and computer-controlled fabrication. The resulting pattern is a Voronoi diagram, a ubiquitous motif in nature. Each relying on the strength of the other, the UV resistant resin coating and metal framework come together in a seamless mixture of color and texture, emblematic of the bone-like creations for which the artist is known. This dance of organic materials and modern design exemplifies Laarman’s interest in developing new ways of furniture production.
The model is currently held in the permanent collection of the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, USA.
