2008
Laika Studios, founded by Nike founder Phil Knight, made its debut in full-length animated films with ‘Coraline’ in February 2009. The film quickly gained a cult following, and to commemorate its success, Nike released the Nike Dunk High 'Coraline' in a limited edition run of only 100 pairs. These sneakers were never available for retail purchase but were instead acquired through a secret code found in the movie's credits, which unlocked a shoe box on the film's promotional website. This pair is accompanied by props from the actual movie - such as the black cat and mouse figurines - which were limited to 50 boxes of the 100 created.
The design of the Nike Dunk High 'Coraline' was inspired by the hand-crafted style of the film's director, Henry Selick. The shoe features a two-tone grey canvas upper with hand-sewn visible seams and black stitching that closely resembles the intricate details in the movie. Further nods to the film include black buttons on the tongue and eyelets, adding to the sneaker's unique design. A glow-in-the-dark outsole completes the look.
