Freddie Mercury’s stage-worn kimono

A kimono for a young woman (furisode), Showa period, 20th century


The long-sleeved robe in red figured satin silk (rinzu), decorated in tie-dye (kanoko shibori) with scattered stylised fans on a ground of chrysanthemums and scrolling karakusa, red silk interior lining


This piece was acquired by Freddie in Japan on tour in 1976 and worn for the tour's final Japanese concert (Tokyo, 4 June 1976), and then again on stage at the Playhouse Theatre, Edinburgh, 1-2 September, 1976.
