The 1977 British Record Industry Britannia Centenary Awards, held in London on 18 October 1977, was intended as a one-off event but developed into the annual Brit Awards. The 1977 awards celebrated the music of the preceding 25 years (the year also marked Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee). 'Bohemian Rhapsody' shared the award for Best British Single with Procul Harem's 'Lighter Shade of Pale'.
