The 1980s and 1990s were a period of trial and error for Julian Van Winkle. With strong demand from far away markets like Japan and but only occasional interest at home, he tried a variety of proofs, ages, and packaging for his bourbons and ryes. This rarely seen bottle is a case in point: Before he standardized his 12-year-old offering as “Lot B,” he bottled it as Van Winkle Family Reserve, with a distinctive label.
