Description

Pappy Van Winkle's 23 Year Old Family Reserve 95.6 proof 1998

The first release of Pappy Van Winkle's 23 Year Old Family Reserve from 1998, gold wax, green glass, bottle #1426, ullage: high shoulder

This bottle comes from the inaugural release of perhaps the most sought-after American whiskeys ever, Pappy Van Winkle 23-Year-Old Family Reserve. Only a vanishing few releases appeared in green-tinted cognac-style bottles, like this one – a year later, Julian Van Winkle III switched to clear glass. The whiskey inside is not from Stitzel-Weller, like most of the Van Winkle releases, but from an undisclosed source suspected to be the shuttered Boone distillery. Whatever the source, this was the whiskey that put Van Winkle on the map among critics and admirers the world over.
