The reference 1463 was introduced by Patek Philippe in 1940 as the manufactures first water resistant chronograph. While it was released only four years after the iconic reference 130, the reference 1463 radically differentiates itself by having a larger case with screw-down back and round chronograph pushers. Thanks to its sport and masculine proportions giving it a timeless appeal, the 1463 is an extremely sought-after reference and a collector’s favourite.
Reference 1463 can be divided into three different series and was produced in yellow gold, pink gold and stainless steel, with an estimated overall production of less than 750 pieces.
- The first series produced until 1945 is distinguished by rather straight and flat lugs paired with a thick no-step bezel and a small domed crown.
- The second series produced until 1961 bears heavier lugs that are curling downwards at the end, a thinner bezel and a larger crown.
- The third and last series in production until its discontinuation around 1969 is recognizable by its more minimalist dial layout without the outer "chemin de fer" and again with flatter case band and lugs.
The present example belongs to the ultimate series. The absence of the rail track is perfect for the integration of the pulsometer. Graduated for 15 pulsations, it enhances the beauty of the well-preserved dial.
The pulsometer scale is rarely seen on 1463. It was a special feature, usually fitted upon special request. For a total of 750 pieces, just over 20 of them are known with a pulsation dial, which represents less than 3%. Furthermore, this present lot is one of only 5 known examples in yellow gold third series 1463 with such a dial.
The inside of the case back is stamped 'FB', the maker's mark for Taubert & Fils. From the late 19th century, when it existed under the name Frères Borgel, Taubert & Fils was one of the finest Geneva-based case makers and specialized in water-resistant cases. It is also engraved ‘Vacuum’ confirming the water resistance of the watch.
Preserved in attractive condition, it is the first time this watch is presented on the international market. It has remained within a noble European family for over 50 years and was offered as an engagement present, explaining the presence of the engraving on the case back.
The 1463 is gaining more and more recognition from seasoned collectors, making them appear less and less frequently on the market. This present lot is an incredible opportunity to acquire a wonderful and fresh to the market example with a rare and attractive dial configuration.
