The Rolex Daytona is celebrating its 60th birthday this year and, looking back at its history, some years were particularly blessed.
In particular, between 1970 and 1972 that knew a generation of Daytona with the shortest production period. This generation was available under two references: the 6262 with a stainless steel bezel, as well as the 6264 distinguished by its black acrylic bezel.
Given this incredibly short production run, examples are rarely appearing on the market.
The reference 6262 can be considered as the bridge between the early and the late vintage Rolex Daytona models. Indeed, it combines the pump pushers such as the 6239, the first Daytona, and the 727 Valjoux calibre, the final evolution of the movement were also later housed in the 6263 and 6265 models.
Aesthetically, the standard dials remain essentially similar, but the Paul Newman dial had now evolved to the black and white scheme. The red remains only present for the Daytona designation. The 6262 and the 6264 Paul Newman offer a more elegant appeal, especially when housed in the stainless steel bezel livery of the 6262. Made in low quantities and during a short period only, they gather the very best of the vintage manual winding Daytona aesthetic and technology.
This Daytona 6262 Paul Newman comes from a 30-year ownership in private hands.
Preserved in superb condition, its bi-colour grainé dial is incredibly attractive and combines all the character of the Paul Newman design and the charm conferred by the patina of the luminescent indexes, that are all present. The case retains strong and attractive proportions. The watch is equipped with its original 7835 bracelet with 271 end links and with a clasp with the code for 1971.
The watch further has just been serviced by a specialized watchmaker who, not only respected the history of the piece, but also fully documented the watch and the service. As such, this watch is accompanied by its fully detailed report, documenting every aspects of the piece and being its passport.
The Reference 6262 is a collector's favourite, but this particular example, in such pristine condition, just serviced, fully documented and coming from a 30-year single ownership, will satisfy even the most demanding enthusiast.
