Meredith, George
The Ordeal of Richard Feverel. A History of Father and Son. London: Chapman and Hall, 1859
3 vols., 8vo. (200 x 127 mm). Internally very clean, with the exception of a few stray spots. Original green-brown cloth elaborately stamped in blind, spines gilt-lettered; cloth a bit "mottled," spines lightly and evenly sunned, some relatively minor shelfwear. Housed in custom black morocco clamshell case.
First edition of an important Victorian text.
Meredith's The Ordeal of Richard Feverel has in recent years been reexamined and reappraised by scholars for its treatment of themes surrounding sexuality and fears of precocious children in Victorian England.
