Writing to William Van Benthuysen of the New York World, Twain acknowledges receipt of a check: "Yes, I accept the check for $288 ⁷⁶/₁₀₀ which squares up everything between The World + me + removes the last of obstruction to the proper progress of The Twentieth Century."
