Folio (330 x 240 mm), comprising: watercolor and ink drawing of Madeline walking down a garden path on the front cover, titled in ink "Madeline" with a flourish "Text and Pictures by Ludwig Bemelmans," front endpapers decorated with graphite, title-page with ink and watercolor illustration of Madeline's costume, and a drawing the Église de la Madeleine at the bottom of the page, 46 working sketches (some with text typed on the bottom margin) on typewriter paper laid down with mucilage glue, numerous corrections and insertions, occasionally covering other sketches, 4 line drawings in ink of the room with the "rabbit" crack on the ceiling, Madeline's accessories, Madeline's beribboned hat, and a decorative architectonic frame; the typewriting paper stained with mucilage, browned and brittle (some chipped, and detached in part or whole). Light wear to binding, original paper spine reattached, labeled in ink " Madeline | Ludwig Bemelmans | Viking ."
