Description

the many figured composition recounting multiple stories of Christ’s life and Passion, the whole painted in miniature in tones of red and green against a gilt ground, a lunette with the New Testament Trinity flanked by the Mother of God and John the Baptist in the centre of the upper border, the panel enclosed in a silver oklad punched and chased with floral decoration and set with descriptive plaques, struck with indistinct maker's mark, 84 standard 


34 by 30cm; 13 3/8 by 11 3/4 in.

Hammer Galleries, 1920s/30s

According to a label on the reverse of the panel stamped with a double-headed eagle, the present was 'purchased from the Hermitage Museum. Originally in the collection of Czarina Alexandra Feodorovna, wife of Nicholas I, the late Czar of Russia'.
