Description

the body hammered gold, the lid applied with a diamond-set crowned cypher for Nicholas II, a cabochon sapphire thumbpiece, the interior engraved with the inscription 'To Noel F. Laurence / Commander R.N. / C.O. H.M.S. E1. / Baltic 1914-1915', with its original fitted case marked with a gold imperial double-headed eagle, struck to the interior with maker's mark beneath the Imperial Warrant and Cyrillic initials NP, 56 standard


length 9.4cm; 3 3/4 in.

Presented by Emperor Nicholas II to Admiral Sir Noel F. Laurence who commanded the E1 Royal Navy submarine during the First World War, in recognition of his defeat of the German High Seas Fleet in the Baltic Sea
