The hippopotamus, who’s name comes from the ancient Greek for “River Horse”, is a large semiaquatic mammal. Europe’s first female hippopotamus, Adhela or ‘Dil’ was presented to the ZSL London Zoo by The Viceroy of Egypt, in July 1854, as a mate for Obaysch. She inhabited the zoo for over 28 years dying in 1882. She gave birth to one female calf, who controversially had the name of GUY FAWKES.
