The Nike MAG which premiered in the 1989 sequel, Back to the Future II, was instantly one of the most coveted – but unavailable – shoes in history. In 2011, Nike finally released 1,500 pairs to the public to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which marked one of Nike’s most popular releases, raising $10 million dollars in 10 days.
In the film, Marty time travels to the year 2015 and famously turns on his Nike MAGs featuring ‘power laces’, that self-tie. That moment, and later scenes in the movie, became iconic in the history of footwear inspiring multiple releases by Nike, including the Nike MAG (2011), Nike MAG (2016), and the Nike Adapt Mag (2019), amongst others.
This 2016 Nike MAG notably features self-lacing “power laces” which Nike branded “Adaptive Fit” technology, as prophesied in the 1989 film. An individually responsive system, ‘Adaptive Fit’ senses the wearer and tightens and loosens the sneakers according to the foot, bringing the design elements from ‘ Back to the Future’ to life.
Offered in this lot is an original left foot last utilized in crafting the iconic 1989 Back to the Future Nike Mag and an original Nike Back to the Future Cast and Crew leather jacket.
Specifically tailored to Michael J. Fox's foot size (7), the last bears the inscription "M.J. Fox Anatomical."
The last was created via a meticulous process. Using a plaster mold of Fox’s foot, a duplicator was then used to fashion the final wooden last. Notably, numerous lasts from this undertaking were discarded and incinerated after use, enhancing the rarity of this surviving piece.
Dated February 1989, just nine months before the film's release in November 1989, this last stands as a tangible relic from the creation of a cinematic classic and one of the world’s most iconic sneakers.
Accompanying the last, is an original Back to the Future Cast and Crew jacket, given to crew members of Back to the Future II. Rumored to be roughly only 25 in existence, this Nike-branded Back to the Future jacket features three Back to the Future patches on the interior lining, paying homage to the first two films, and the third that was in the making.
Interestingly, the jacket also features a nod to the 1982 film E.T., with a silhouette of the character riding their bike. This silhouette is also the logo of Steven Speilberg’s Amblin Entertainment. Spielberg was an executive producer of the Back to the Future franchise.
