The thangka depicts the wrathful protector goddess Shri Devi holding in her four hands a flaming sword, lance, skull cup and a ritual dagger (kila) surmounted by a peacock feather, riding her mule across a sea of blood surrounded by mountain peaks, with four fearsome dakini above, one with kapalas, one with wind wheels (Tib. rlung ‘khor) at the left, one unleashing thunder and lightning and another with sickle and a sheaf of grain to the right, with Shakyamuni Buddha seated above and twelve mounted deities below

Amy Heller identifies the four fearsome dakini above as the daughters of Mara, and the twelve feminine divinities in Shri Devi’s entourage below as Tenma mounted on ferocious animals including yak, garuda, lion, deer and tiger, in Nathalie Bazin, ed., Rituels tibétains: Visions secrètes du Ve Dalai Lama, Paris, 2002.
