The golden figure of King Gesar dressed in armor holding a lance and lasso, with a sword and scabbard at his waist, bow and arrows in quivers at his back and side, riding through landscape with snow lion, leopard, tiger, deer and wolf, black crows and falcons flying above, surrounded by five Worldly Protectors (Tib. drala) mounted on a Garuda and dragon above, a white tiger, deer and buffalo beneath, with Padmasambhava flanked by the sun and moon at the apex.

 

This rare, early, and finely painted thangka depicts King Gesar, a cultural hero amongst Tibetans and whose epic relates the heroic deeds of the fearless king in the legendary land of Ling.
