Description
An inscribed stone figure of Maravijaya Buddha
Eastern India, Pala period, 10th / 11th century
Height 11¾ in., 29.8 cm
Property of a retired museum curator, acquired in the 1970s, (by repute).
The Buddha is finely carved with hands in bhumisparsa mudra, seated in vajraparyankasana on a lion throne with earth goddess Prithvi beneath, flanked by two standing bodhisattva, a seated Buddha above and fragmentary leaves of the bhodi tree.
Compare the lotus pedestal and throne style of a 10th century grey chlorite crowned Buddha from Bihar, probably Gaya district, in Sherman Lee, Asian Art from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd, The Asia Society, New York, 1975, p. 14, pl. 5.
