A gold-mounted tortoiseshell and ivory snuff box, probably Italian, circa 1740,

the box formed of a whole turtle shell, the front decorated with a boldly-chased rocaille shell ornament in the style of Meissonier, the hinged lid mounted with geometrically-engraved gold borders and gold fan-shaped ornaments to corners, protruding scrollwork thumbpiece, the interior of the lid inset with a glazed portrait miniature of the Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa of Austria with the royal regalia in the background, holding a crucifix below an inscription to the left reading: 'crucifixus dux meus', painted on ivory, illegible mark to rim and later import marks,
