"The Coogi garments I selected seem painterly because they are concerned with a figure/ground polemic. They mimic the plane that paintings occur upon, which is what initially led me to wanting to work with them as a material to make paintings." Jayson Musson quoted in Emily Spivack, "Q&A: Jayson Musson Breaks Down Coogi Sweaters, Smithsonian Magazine, 2012

Untitled #1 from 2011 is one of the earliest examples of Musson disassembling and reconstructing the '80 and '90 pop-cultural icon, the Coogi sweater. An Australian brand, Coogi, erupted onto the scene with their polychromatic knit sweaters worn by the likes of rapper Notorious B.I.G. A symbol of status and wealth in Musson's eyes, the Coogi sweater is remodeled in his playful yet profound "paintings" that illustrate the parallels between these sweaters and art, as well as the fundamental differences.
