Description
A silk embroidered shaped mirror frame, English, Charles II, third quarter 17th century
Frame of shaped format, worked in polychrome floss silk with some minor metal thread highlights to landscape motifs and the crowns, worked fortified buildings in each upper corner and well in each lower corner, the upper and lower sections centred with a classical figure playing a musical instrument, flanked by acorn and fruiting branches and running hounds and flowers or heraldic symbols of a lion and unicorn, the sides with standing figures, likely to be representing King Charles II and Queen Catherine of Braganza, within crown topped column supported canopies, with large flowers and butterflies around, all on a cream coloured satin ground, the outer and inner edges applied with silver-gilt braid, with gilt-metal tassels hanging on the lower edge beneath the lion and unicorn, with later rectangular mirror plate
