Description

Property from the Collection of Robin Bradley Martin

Continental Europe, Early 17th century, The Guennol Enameled-Gold-Mounted Cup

stamped with a later 19th century French control mark

gold, enamel and jasper

height 1¾ in.; 4.4cm.

The two enameled handles adorning the present cup are decorated with the unique cosse de pois or pea-pod style. This design was characterized by irregular groupings of flowers and leaves and was in vogue during the early 17th century, due in part to the etchings of similarly styled foliage by French printmakers Balthasar Moncornet and Gédéon Légaré, who helped popularize this design.
