Jade tiger-head form ornament such as the present lot is used as the terminal or cap of a jade hairpin. See a closely related example excavated from Qianzhangda, Tengzhou city, illustrated in Tengzhou qianzhangda mudi [Tombs of Qianzhangda in Tengzhou], Beijing, 2005, pl. 65; and another similar example is illustrated in Gems of Beijing Cultural Relics Series: Jades, Beijing, 2002, pl. 28. 二者皆青黃玉質,雕虎首,一為陽線勾勒,一為陰線雕琢,中皆穿。
滕州前掌大出土一件西周虎首玉笄帽與之相類,見《滕州前掌大墓地》,北京,2005年,彩版65,圖8。北京昌平西周墓出土一件獸面珮飾,可資參考,見《北京文物精粹大系玉器卷》,北京,2002年,圖版28。陝西省寶雞周原博物館藏一件玉獸頭珮亦資參考,見劉雲輝著,《周原玉器》,台北,1996年,圖版177。
