Height 7⅛ in., 18.2 cm

Collection of Charles Arthur Nichols, Jr. (1901-1995), acquired in Tianjin in 1947, and thence by descent.

In addition to the present vessel, another late Shang dynasty bronze jue with the same pictogram is recorded. The jue was reputedly discovered in Anyang, Henan province and published in Huang Jun, Yezhong pianyu erji [Feathers from Yezhong series II], vol. 1, Beijing, 1937, p. 25.
