Stephen Burrows Pink Silk Top, 1970


Burrows rose to prominence in the late 1960s, becoming a key figure in the vibrant and eclectic New York fashion scene. Often hailed as the "king of jersey" for his innovative use of the fabric, Burrows gained widespread recognition for his fluid and body-conscious designs. Burrows made history in 1973 when he became the first African American designer to gain international acclaim, winning the prestigious Coty Award.
