Description

Horapollo

Ιερογλυφικα. Valencia: Antonio Sanahuja, 1556

8vo (146 x 98mm.), woodcut printer's device of a rhinoceros on title-page, woodcut initials, later crushed red morocco gilt in period style by Isidore Smeers, gilt edges

First printed by Aldus Manutius in 1505, this edition of Horapollo's hieroglyphics was produced by Juan Lorenzo Palmireno, humanist scholar and professor of Greek in Valencia. Sanahuja was active as a bookseller from 1544 onwards, and also printed books for a short period between 1554-1556. His printer's device was based on Dürer's rhinoceros.
