folio (453 x 280mm.), double-page engraved additional title-page, engraved frontispiece portrait of the Duke of Marlborough, engraved head- and tailpieces and initials, 61 double-page engraved plates and maps, 23 single engraved plates, contemporary diced russia gilt, spine gilt in compartments incorporating small bird, dolphin, and crown and sceptre tools, marbled edges, corners bumped and repaired, joints cracked
Tonson's magnificent edition of Caesar's works, richly illustrated with maps, camp layouts, depictions of native peoples and their customs, and a set of engravings of Mantegna's Triumph of the Caesars (now at Hampton Court). According to ESTC, this is one of the ordinary paper copies (there were also large paper copies, around 5cm taller).
