The remarkable illumination of this Qur’an in which each juz’ is marked by an illuminated headpiece of various colours, indicates that it was a prized commission for a wealthy patron. The patron is identified in the colophon as Mustafa ibn ‘Ali Gümüshanevi, Kul Aghasi (Adjutant Major) of the Artillery Regiment from among the officers of the Imperial Army.
The artist responsible for this lavish illumination is identified as ‘Abd al-Rahman Zuhdi known as Najjarzade al-Ardarumi (Erzurumi), pupil of al-Hajj ‘Ali al-Kamali Afandi (Kemali Efendi), known as Kundakci-zade. The scribe, Hafiz Mustafa Afandi Hadhiq al-Akhsankhawi was a pupil of Salman Sukuti Afandi al-Ardarumi and the colophon states that this is the nineteenth Qur’an copied by him.
