Description

of baluster form on short foot rising to a flaring mouth and with simple loop handle, decorated with alternating scrolling green and white bands, the former with central black stripes and outline, the latter with blue central stripes, the rim decorated with band of stylised palm leaves, the shoulder with a dotted band and the lower body with a frieze of waves

Jugs with striped design can be dated back to the 1580s based on an example sold in Christie's London, 19 November 2002, lot 144, mounted with English silver fixtures hallmarked 1586-87. For a closely similar design, please also see a jug in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no.203-1887).
