the compressed globular body on a straight foot and rising to a cylindrical neck with a lipped rim, cast with two shaped cartouches at the body enclosing Arabic inscriptions in relief against a ring-punched ground, in a Japanese wood box

A similar Ming dynasty vase with a pair of handles was sold in Sotheby's New York, 13 September 2017, lot 143, and two others examples with engraved bands of lotus sprays were sold in the same rooms, 21 March 2015, lots 741-2. This group relates to a vase illustrated in Sydney L. Moss, Emperor, Scholar, Artisan, Monk, London, 1984, cat. no.119.
