Arabic manuscript on paper, comprising 9 bifolios and 6 single leaves, 17 lines to the page written in eastern Kufic in black ink, diacritics in red and green, verses separated by gold roundels, further text divisions marked by gold and polychrome marginal medallions, 6 surah headings in gold


35.9 by 29.8cm.

This group of leaves originates from a Qur’an manuscript from which two folios, mounted vertically, were sold at Christie’s, London, 10 October 2014, lot 255 and two further folios, mounted similarly, are in the Khalili Collection (inv.no. KFQ74, James, 1992, pp.178-9, no.95). This substantial group give a clearer impression of how the original manuscript was conceived. Manuscripts displaying a comparable script to the present group include a section sold at Christie’s, London, 21 April 2016, lot 63, and a folio in the Smithsonian (acc.no. F2020.1.4).
