ink on wood, one side with 6 lines of cursive, a sticker with the French translation lower left, the other side with 11 lines of Maghribi, a sticker in French lower right
36.1 by 25.8cm.
In cursive, an Arabic quatrain on the subject of literacy:
‘If you cannot read and do not understand it,
You are better dead than alive.
Your day is useless and your night is total,
Like an animal, you are silent.’
In Maghribi, Arabic verses on the subject of happiness, well-being and reliance on God, followed by tafkirat al-jaza’ir sanah 1252, ‘Souvenir of Algeria, year 1252’
