In a typewritten note Professor Hans Möbius speculates as to the iconography of the present object. Möbius (1895-1977) was a German classical archaeologist and academic. He held posts at the German Archaeological Institute at Athens, the State museum in Kassel and the University of Würzburg, where he oversaw the reconstruction of the war-damaged Martin von Wagner Museum in 1945. He published on topics such as the Alexandrian influence on Roman art (Alexandria und Rom, 1964), the iconographical scheme of the Portland Vase (Die Reliefs der Portlandvase und das antike Dreifigurenbild, 1965), and worked extensively on grave reliefs, most notably contributing to a comprehensive corpus of East Greek funerary sculpture (Die ostgriechischen Grabreliefs, 1977) alongside Ernst Pfuhl.
