A Worcester Plate and a Japanese Plate from the 'Sebright' Service, Circa 1770 and Earlier


of flat form with shallow rim, painted in Japanese Imari style with large peonies and leaves in shades of underglaze-blue, over-painted in iron-red and green enameling and gilding, with pseudo Chinese character marks, the Japanese plate, similarly painted.

Sir John Sebright, Bt. of Worcestershire ordered a small number of replacement pieces from the Worcester for his Japanese porcelain service. A Worcester plate from the Sebright service is illustrated in Albert Amor, Dr. John Wall, 1708-1776, A Commemorative Loan Exhibition of Dr. Wall Period Worcester Porcelain, London 1976, cat no. 36, where it is noted a further plate is in the British Museum, London.
