Newman achieved his sixth Academy Award nomination with his performance as Frank Gavin in this courtroom drama. He lost to Ben Kingsley, who delivered an extraordinary performance in the title role of Gandhi (1982), which received a leading eleven nominations that year, winning eight (more than any other film nominated that year), including those for the Best Picture and Best Director (Richard Attenborough).
