Description

The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean

PATSY Award presented to "Bruno" the Bear

1973

A 2nd-place PATSY Award (11 x 3 x 3 in.) presented to Ron Oxley (owner/trainer) for "Bruno" the bear from the film The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean in 1973.

Created by the American Humane Association in 1939, the PATSY Award, also known as the "Picture Animal Top Star of the Year" or "Performing Animal Television Star of the Year," was awarded to trainers of animal actors. The present PATSY was awarded to Ron Oxley for Bruno the bear, who co-starred with Paul Newman as Watch Bear in The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean. Newman thought that Bruno stole every scene in which they appeared together, an opinion shared by many reviewers. In the February 17, 1973 issue of The Montreal Gazette, Dave Billington wrote: "For the first time in a long and rewarding film career Paul Newman has emerged from a film second best. And his fall is precipitated by a bear named Bruno."
