Paul Newman made his auspicious directorial debut with Rachel, Rachel, casting his wife Joanne Woodward in the lead role of Rachel Cameron. The couple teamed up to produce the film together, but after struggling to secure industry support, the two put their own money into the budget. Regarding Newman's decision to direct the film, actor Ethan Hawke told TCM, it was "to service his love of his favorite actor."
The film opened to much critical acclaim. Beyond the present two New York Film Critics Awards, the film was nominated for four Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress for Woodward, and Best Supporting Actress for Estelle Parsons) and won two Golden Globes: Best Director and Best Actress (Drama).
