President Nixon's Enemies List
Framed display of reproductions of three documents relating to President Nixon's Enemies List: memorandum from George T. Bell to John Dean, Jerry Warren, and Van Shumway, 24 June 1971; memorandum from Charles Colson to John Dean, 9 September 1971; third page of the list featuring enemies number 14 through 20; together with a reproduction of a photography of Nixon and a title plaque. Frame size 533 x 632 mm.
The Enemies List was compiled by Charles Colson and George T. Bell, both advisors to the president, and included a wide range of persons believed to be political opponents of Nixon. In another White House memorandum not featured in this display, John Dean explained the purpose of the list: "This memorandum addresses the matter of how we can maximize the fact of our incumbency in dealing with persons known to be active in their opposition to our Administration; stated a bit more bluntly—how we can use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies."
Paul Newman appeared on the list as number 19, described as "Radic-Lib causes. Heavy Mc Carthy involvement in '68. Used effectively in nationwide T.V. commercials. '72 involvement certain."
