Two Photographs of Newman in the United States Navy

Two framed photos from Newman’s service in the United States Navy, one a later printed copy of a young Newman with a buddy among a tropical setting (sight: 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 in.; framed: 11 3/8 x 9 3/8 in.), the other a shot of an exuberant ship’s crew on board the air carrier Bunker Hill (sight: 7 x 9 in.; framed: 11 x 13 in.).

Newman served in the Pacific during World War II, as a radio gunner in torpedo bombers, with the rank of Aviation Radio Man Third Class. The Battle of Okinawa in 1945 saw some of the most violent battles during the war and Newman’s carrier was the subject of a kamikaze attack that killed members of his unit among the hundreds of casualties among the ship’s crew. The death of a close friend in an accident while on active duty, as well as his Okinawa service, provided some of the emotional triggers Newman would reference in his acting career.
