Paul Newman Academy Award® Nomination Plaque
Certificate of Nomination plaque (13 1/2 x 11 3/4 in.) awarded to Paul Newman for Best Actor at the 31st Academy Awards in 1959; signed by Academy President George Stevens.
Newman scored his first nomination in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Brick Pollitt in this feverish adaptation of Tennessee Williams' 1955 Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name. Newman starred alongside Elizabeth Taylor, Burl Ives, Jack Carson, and Judith Anderson, delivering a performance that was well-received by both critics and audiences. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, but did not win any.
Interestingly, the movie was originally to be filmed in black-and-white, as was the standard practice with movie adaptations of the plays of Tennessee Williams, but once Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor were cast as the leads, writer and director Richard Brooks insisted on shooting the film in color, in deference to the public's well-known admiration for Taylor's violet and Newman's strikingly blue eyes.
