Eduard Charlemont, brother of Hugo Charlemont, was a celebrated Central European painter, known for portraits and genre scenes. He lived in Paris from 1877 onward and developed a successful career with the support of Parisian dealer Charles Sedelmayer, who also represented other Central European artists including Mihaly Munkacsy, Eugen Jettel, and Václav Brožík.

The 2020 exhibition and accompanying catalogue on the brothers Eduard, Hugo, and Theodor Charlemont, organized by the Regional Gallery in Liberec, sheds greater light on the family's artistic ambitions and individual careers.

We are grateful to Dr. Sarka Leubnerova for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
